BCB president Faruque Ahmed confirmed the development to Daily Sun on Tuesday adding that they have taken the decision to appoint Imran after the post went vacant following the departure of Hasan Tillakaratne as part of their pledge to promote local coaches.

“We have decided to appoint Imran (Sarwar) as our national women’s team head coach after the post went vacant following the departure of Hasan,” said Faruque on Tuesday.

“When I took over I promised that I will try my level best to provide platform for the local coaches in national set-up and appointment of Imran is part of that pledge as I want the women’s team to run by the local coaches considering the fact what I feel is that if we don’t give them the responsibility how can we know whether they are performing or not,” he said.

Imran, who had been the head coach of Bangladesh men’s team in their Test debut against India in 2000, recently worked as already head coach of Bangladesh U-19 women’s team during the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia.
Imran already started working with the women’s national team as they are preparing for the eight-team ICC Women’s World Cup qualifying event as they failed to make direct entry into the tournament.

Bangladesh missed direct qualification for the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup as they finished on 21 points in the Women’s Championship table, level with New Zealand who had more wins – nine opposed to Bangladesh’s eight – and secured the sixth and final direct spot.

Bangladesh eight-wicket loss to West Indies in the three-match series decider forced them to play in the qualifiers to earn a spot in the ICC event, scheduled to be played in India later this year.
